Development in Practice: Activities for Babies with Down Syndrome

On Saturday, April 24, 1:30-4:00 the DSIA will host a viewing of this Down Syndrome Education film designed for parents who have a child with Down syndrome who is 2-years-old or younger. We will watch the 80-minute film and then have a group discussion to share ideas, ask questions, share our experiences that might help one another, etc. An Infant Educator from both the Sacramento and Placer County Offices of Education will be there to join in the discussion.

Location: The Ranch House at Whitney Ranch, Rocklin, CA

Feel free to bring a snack to share with the group, but it is not required. Unfortunately, child care will not be available.

Film Description:

Children with Down syndrome make progress in all areas of development, in the same way as other children, but usually at a slower pace. Some areas of development may be more delayed than others, leading researchers to identify a specific profile of strengths and needs. This video explores what our understanding of this profile tells us about how early development can be promoted for babies with Down syndrome from birth to 18 months.

The film emphasises the importance of everyday family activities for children's learning and development. It focuses on practical activities to promote development that can be woven into everyday routines and activities. Section 1 focuses on early development. It describes the important elements of development and demonstrates significant behaviours and activities for very young babies. It seeks to provide a general foundation for later skills to build on and it discusses the principles that can be applied to different areas of development. Section 2 gives practical advice and activities for supporting the development of skills that may be more difficult for babies with Down syndrome to develop independently. Activities are clearly illustrated by parents and therapists working with young babies with Down syndrome.
