Parent Wellness Dance Night On May 5, DSIA hosted dance lessons for teen and adult self-advocates. We had a great turnout! A big thank you goes out to our dance instructor, Veronica Landin-Ortiz, who volunteered her time, teaching everyone the basic steps for Salsa dancing. Everyone had a fun time learning new dance steps and putting it into practice with a partner on the dance floor. Due to popular demand, DSIA will definitely bring back this fun event!

Family Open House at the UC Davis MIND Institute. April 28
Parent Wellness On April 27, DSIA hosted a Health and Wellness through Yoga and Reflective Writing event at the WarmLine family resource center.
DSIA Pizza Night for TEENS with Down syndrome. On April 13, TEENS and their parents had a great time at Straw Hat Pizza, this event was free for DSIA families.

Railroad Museum Outing. On March 3rd, many DSIA families enjoyed a beautiful morning at the Railroad Museum! All had a great time!
Yolo Community Network Playdate. On March 17, families in Yolo County hosted a DSIA playdate!
IEP Workshop with Lynne Castellucci. On March 31st, DSIA featured Lynne Castellucci, teaching our families to be advocates for their children in the education, and answering questions about IEP's and other education issues!

Pizza Nights for Adults with Ds and their families. On February 24th, the DSIA hosted a pizza night for adults with Down syndrome and their families. Over 30 people showed up to visit with old friends and make new friends. Please look for more upcoming pizza nights!

Marriage and Family Discussion with Sue Trunnell On January 13, the DSIA featured a presentation by Sue Trunnell, MA MFT. where families learned more about building strong marriages around their child with a disability.

Community Support Network. On December 10, the CSN featured a presentation by Mila Zea, M.Ed., B.C.B.A. Director - Building Blocks Behavior Consultants, Inc. where families learned more about parent techniques and strategies.
Parent Wellness. On December 9, families learned the importance of health through physical activity, like Zumba and Yoga.
Holiday Pancake Breakfast. On December 3rd, many families celebrated the spirit of the holidays with DSIA, Even Santa joined families as they enjoyed the great food, arts and crafts and game area. A great time was had by all.

STEP UP FOR DOWN SYNDROME WALK. On October 23, over 800 people came together to STEP UP and support DSIA! The walk had it all - old friends, new friends, great vendors, fabulous volunteers, wonderful entertainment, fantastic food and the Walk raised over $31,000 that will enable DSIA to continue to provide resources and support within the greater Sacramento area!

CAPITOL AIRSHOW. September 9. The DSIA was invited to a special day for DSIA families and UC Davis Children's Hospital patients only! This event was closed to the public, and provided FREE admission to a preview of the California Capitol Airshow.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT NETWORK. On September 17, the CSN featured a presentation by the Special Olympics where families learned more about this great program.
COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE, SACRAMENTO CITY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. On September 20, the DSIA attended the Kickoff Resource Fair. Over 90 people where in attendance and learned more about the CAC and resources in their community.

DreamNight at the Zoo. On June 3, DSIA hosted a picnic at William Land Park. Then families participated in DreamNight at the Sacramento Zoo - a special night for families with children with disabilities.
Community Support Network. On Saturday, June 11, the DSIA hosted a Community Support Network gathering. Our special guest speaker was DSIA Board Member and Attorney Trevor Stapleton. Trevor is a partner at Wilke Fleury and spoke on special needs trusts and conservatroshoips. CSN meetings, held periodically throughout the year, offer an opportunity for families to connect, socialize, share, and enjoy educational opportunities.

Sibling Workshop. On Saturday April 16, DSIA hosted Dr. Brian Skotko and Sue Levine. They put on a fantastic workshop for the siblings of children with Down Syndrome. The children had a great time, and learned a lot about Down syndrome - and they got some special time to meet and hang out with other children who have a sibling with Down syndrome, too.
Parent Wellness Event. On Friday April 8, DSIA in paetneship with Sacramento County Office of Education Infant Development Program hosted a Parent Wellness Event. This event featured Fumiko Takatsu, Dr. Andrew Scott, and SCOE's Occupational Therapists - all providing information and tips on staying healthy.

Oral Motor Clinic. In February the DSIA brought Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson's oral motor clinic to Sacramento. Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson is a world-renowned speech language pathologist who specializes in oral motor therapy. On Saturday, February 5, as part of her oral motor clinic, Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson gave a free 2-hour presentation for parents of children with Down syndrome.
The Proactive Approach to Your Child’s Education. On Saturday, February 19, The Community Advisory Committee to Special Education presented a seminar designed for parents, family members, legal guardian’s, and professionals who live and work with children who have special needs. Topics discussed included an overview of available agencies, programs & services, the Alta California Regional Center System, and the IEP Process.
Ballroom Dance Program. During the month of February Sacramento Counseling Services offered ballroom dance/social communication lessons. The program included private lessons, consulting with the instructor to include social communication within the dance instruction, facilitated discussions, and a chaperoned dance.
Family Connections: Talking with Your Children (of any age!) About Sex. On Saturday, February 26, Sue Simonson presented an interactive presentation for parents, to help empower them to become their own children’s primary sex educator - “credible witnesses” to their children regarding sex and sexuality. She discussed how parents can open the door to communicating with their children about sex, and provide useful tools on how to communicate through "teachable moments."
Behavior Workshop. On Monday, February 28, the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) presented a workshop focused on developing the knowledge and expertise to provide appropriate positive behavioral support interventions aimed at increasing learning and avoiding behavior challenges. Topics discussed included behavior interventions, new discipline provisions under IDEA 2004, and children’s rights.

Advocacy Skills Workshop. On Monday, January 31, the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) presented an Advocacy Skills workshop, teaching skills to ensure that IEP members truly hear a parent's perspective, take them seriously, and know that they understand the IEP process and their rights.

Success Defined: A Student Centered Transition Project. On Saturday, November 6, the Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, presented day two of their 2-day training and follow along project uniquely designed for high school juniors and seniors with developmental disabilities to prepare them and their families for their transition to independent living.

Step Up for Down Syndrome: DSIA's 6th Annual Walk. A few raindrops couldn't dampen the sense of fun and family at the Step Up for Down syndrome Walk - DSIA's 6th Annual Walk, on Sunday, October 17. The Walk had it all - old friends, new friends, great vendors, fabulous volunteers, wonderful entertainment, fantastic food, and......the Walk raised $55, 000 that will enable the DSIA to continue to offer support to the greater Sacramento area's Down syndrome community and those touched by Down syndrome!

Dream Theatre Grand Opening. On Friday, August 20, the Dream Theatre, a new community resource, celebrated it's Grand Opening in Roseville. The Dream Theatre was formed to provide adult individuals with special needs a unique and meaningful dramatic arts program. They offer a dynamic and constantly evolving, person-centered, program where a person’s abilities are more important than their disabilities.

Inclusion in Practice: Educating Children with Down Syndrome at Primary School. On Saturday, July 10, the DSIA hosted a viewing of a Down Syndrome Education film designed for parents who have a child with Down syndrome who is entering or currently attending elementary school. A group discussion followed to share ideas, ask questions, and share experiences. A local advocate specializing in K-8 education was there to join in the discussion.

Southside Park Play Date. On Saturday, July 10, the Sacramento Parks and Recreation Department presented one of several Southside Park Play Dates. NDSS Webinar. On Friday, July 23, The NDSS presented an affiliate webinar featuring Dr. Mary Pipan of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, discussing Atypical Behavior in Down Syndrome.

Dreamnight at the Zoo. On Friday, June 4th, the Sacramento Zoo is hosted the fifth annual Dreamnight at the Zoo, a special free evening for children with chronic illnesses or disabilities and their families.

DSIA-UCD Community Event. On Thursday, April 22, the DSIA partnered with the UC Davis Medical School to create a community event around Down syndrome! UCD sponsored a Distinguished Lecture Series that featured national Down syndrome expert Dr. George Capone, Director of the Down Syndrome Clinic at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Capone spoke about Maximizing Academic Potential: Treating Medical and Behavioral Conditions Associated with Down Syndrome and how to help children reach their full potential.
Development in Practice: Activities for Babies with Down Syndrome. On Saturday, April 24, the DSIA hosted a viewing of the Down Syndrome Education film designed for parents who have a child with Down syndrome who is 2-years-old or younger. The film emphasised the importance of everyday family activities for children's learning and development. It focused on practical activities to promote development that can be woven into everyday routines and activities. A group discussion followed.

Sibling Workshop. Saturday Nov 14, 2009. Nationally known medical specialist Dr. Brian Skotko and his colleague Sue Levine lead an all-day workshop for brothers and sisters who have siblings with disabilities. In this workshop, brothers and sisters had an opportunity, through interactive exercises, games, and role-playing scenarios, to learn more about disabilities in an accepting and confidential environment with peers.

DSIA Annual Walk. DSIA's 5th Annual Walk, Step Up for Down Syndrome, was a hugh success! Over 700 registered walkers enjoyed a one-mile walk on beautiful fall day in Land Park on October 25th, 2009. The event raised over $30,000 to help support DSIA's hospital outreach program and support services for families.

National Down Syndrome Congress Annual Convention. The DSIA hosted NDSC's annual convention at the Sacramento Convention Center. The DSIA recruited over 320 local volunteers to help run the convention. Families, medical professionals, and therapists from all over the United States - and all over the world! - came to Sacramento for educational workshops and seminars related to Down syndrome across the lifespan.

Second Annual Hungry for Life Progressive Dinner Party! 225 people joined the DSIA at Sacramento's finest restaurants for a night to remember! Thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, attendees, and restaurant hosts for a wonderful evening. Beginning at the L Street Courtyard, guests then traveled to two of the participating restaurants for appetizers and the main course, with an amazing dessert spread back at the Courtyard. Thank you to our restaurants: Mulvaney's B & L, Aioli, The Waterboy, Lounge on 20, L Wine Lounge and Urban Kitchen, and Zocalo. Proceeds totaling about $25,000 will benefit the DSIA's family programs.

DSIA Walk Featuring Chris Burke! Saturday, October 4. DSIA brought out over 500 people to Southside park in Sacramento and mother nature kept the day sunny and warm! We want to thank everyone who came out and walked with us - you all are helping to make a direct difference in the lives of those affected by Down syndrome. The Kids Zone and prizes, the walk, resource fair, and a fabulous concert by Chris Burke and his band helped make the day a huge success!

Winter Social and Convention Kickoff: February 9, 2009. More than 160 DSIA families, friends and volunteers enjoyed an evening of roller skating and socializing at Roller King in Roseville.

Heartache to Hope: Professionals. This program is not specific to Down syndrome. Professionals serving people with all disabilities are welcome. Journey with Stacey B Thacker, LMFT, as she shares her family's experience raising a child with multiple disabilities. In this interactive presentation, Stacey outlines the emotional impact of disability on the family and assists professionals in gaining the skills necessary to facilitate growth among the families they serve as well as in themselves. Sponsored jointly by the DSIA, Alta California Regional Center, Warmline Family Resource Center and the Sacramento County Office of Education.
Heartache to Hope: Parents. This presentation is not specific to Down syndrome. Family members affected by all disabilities are welcome. Free dinner and childcare will be provided for those who register. Families who have children with special needs will find in this workshop a safe and inviting place to explore the emotional impact of their child's condition on themselves and their family. They will learn new ways of interacting with each other that foster support, love and maintain or restore functional family dynamics. DSIA Ice Cream Social for Families and Professionals. McKinley Park, Sacramento. The Down Syndrome Information Alliance celebrated the end of summer with our friends and families at our August ice cream social. This well-shaded park offered a great gathering spot for adult and children alike. DSIA provided fruit bars and ice cream sandwiches were generously donated by Dreyer's.

National Down Syndrome Congress Annual Convention in Boston. DSIA Joined 2,000 families and professionals for this amazing experience where we learned from the world’s experts in Down syndrome. Sessions on education, healthcare, sibling topics, dating, financial planning, employment and much more! There was also a sibling conference and a youth/adult (with Down syndrome) conference that ran concurrently.
DSIA Family Picnic at Memorial Park in Rocklin. DSIA held a family picnic, planned by Nancy Muir, on Saturday, July 26 for the whole family. We enjoyed networking for parents, grandparents and teens and a sprinkler play area for the kids. Free lunch was provided for those who RSVP'd!

Oral Motor Issues in Down syndrome. Thursday, June 19 from 6 pm - 8 pm with free dinner and free childcare.
Feeding Therapy: A Sensory Motor Approach. Lori Overland, MS, CCC-SLP provided a step-by-step approach to teach your tolerance of touch, enabling eating and use of oral-motor therapy tools. Day 1 focused on promoting acceptance of touch for feeding and oral exercises. Lori’s techniques incorporate a variety of temperatures textures and tastes. Day 2 featured hands-on learning of proper therapeutic techniques for spoon feeding, straw drinking and chewing solid foods.

Hungry for Life Progressive Dinner PartyDon't you just love a good progressive dinner party? We do! With 250 attendees dining in some of Sacramento's finest retaurants, we had a blast at this year's Hungry for Life Progressive Dinner Party. Beginning at the Sacramento Convention Center guests then traveled to two of the participating restaurants for appetizers and the main course, with an amazing dessert spread by Classique Catering back at the Convention Center. Knowledge Network: Teaching Reading and Math. The DSIA presented the Down Syndrome Foundation of Orange County's, "The Learning Program." This seminar provided an overview of research-based principles, practices and materials that can be used by parents and educators with children with Down syndrome of all ages. The DSFOC has partnered with educators, researchers and administrators to develop a program that uses effective teaching strategies and customized materials to support parents and children in the educational process.
